Bonus Marchers’ Anacostia Encampment 1932

Many of the demonstrating veterans camped out in a shantytown they built from refuse on the banks of the Anacostia River. Shantytowns, or “Hoovervilles” as they were known, sprung up all over during the Great Depression to house the homeless.
