Senate Resolution Against Grant’s Order, 1863

. . . whereas by virtue of said order the Jews as a class—who claim to be legal citizens of the United States have been expelled from the city of Paducah Kentucky—and have been driven from their businesses and homes by the military authority, without any specific charges having been made against them, or any opportunity given them to meet the vague and several charges put forth I said order;
The Senate condemned Grant’s order as ‘’illegal, tyrannical, cruel and unjust” and asked the President to rescind it.

As President, Ulysses S. Grant became an advocate and protector of the Jewish people. He appointed more Jews to Federal Government offices than any previous administration and opposed an attempt to make the United States a Christian state.
