The Tacoma Riot—Lum May’s Testimony 1886

Hoping to revive trade talks with China, President Grover Cleveland pushed legislators to grant the demands of the Chinese victims of the Tacoma riot. Congress requested more information. Lum May, one of the few victims willing to speak publicly, gave this account of the violence that occurred and its effects on him and his family.
