...in a treaty made in 1856 by the United States, with said tribe of Indians, giving them...the right to become citizens after the period of ten years.

Members of the Stockbridge-Munsee tribe disagreed over becoming U.S. citizens. This divide caused intertribal tension for decades and eventually split up the tribe.
...were the right given us to cut, and take the said timber to the Oshkosh market...this would give Employment to a larg class of the said Indians...

The Stockbridge-Munsee lived in poverty on their reservation and wanted the right to log their own land to provide for themselves.

Some Stockbridge-Munsee Indians petitioned to become citizens and to log their own land. Instead, the Government sold much of their land to non-Indian lumber barons.
