Executive Order 9981

Executive Order 9981 1948

President Harry Truman signed this Executive Order in 1948 ordering the desegregation of the military and ending the military quota that only allowed 10 per cent of soldiers to be black. Truman and his advisers hoped a desegregated military could be a model for the rest of American society.
